A useful, functional, and artistic concept currently being applied successfully in a number of real world scenarios.
Worked example · data centers · one shape, four moves
Strip "data center," "water," "power," "community." What remains: appetite unbounded by location. That shape has been solved before — by living things. What the method found is not a cooling fix.
This is not a solution. It is the start of a conversation — one that requires more humans in the loop. People who know which questions are still missing from the equation.
Register guard · rejected
Trees shift gas exchange to night to save water. Do the same with heat.
Shape matched: emit when the air is cool. But trees are C3 — stomata open in daylight, closed after dark. The opposite schedule. Desert succulents do the night-shift; conifers do not. A form match with no shared life underneath it.
Register guard · held
The source never changed. The room did.
Monoterpenes release on temperature, not light. Emission holds steady after sunset while the mixing layer collapses and the photochemical scrubber shuts off. What you smell at night is not the tree acting. It is the medium ceasing to act.
Forest — volatiles. Monoterpenes release on temperature, not light, so conifers keep emitting after dark. The night smell is not the tree doing more. It is a shallower room and no one clearing it.
Schematic, not a sounding. The altitude axis is compressed so the near-ground band stays legible; on a linear scale the entire nocturnal layer is a hairline. Mixing depth, scrubbing rate, and turbulence follow the shape of a clear-sky mid-latitude day — the behaviour is right, the numbers are illustrative.
What survived the guard
Look for the thing that changed. It was never the emitter. Radiative cooling stabilizes the air after sunset and a kilometre of dilution becomes a few dozen metres — the same plume, a smaller room.
Hydroxyl radical is built by sunlight and destroys most volatiles all day. At dark, production stops. Nothing was added at night. Something was subtracted, and subtraction is a behaviour too.
So the night-shift is worse, not better, for a body large enough to fill the room. Urban heat islands peak after dark for exactly this reason. Dispersal capacity is local, real, and collapses every night — and nobody prices it.
Provenance · four moves · two reversals
The journey is the only thing that shows the method can overturn the person running it. Follow the moves — they ran live, in order, on this problem.
Strip the problem of every word that ties it to its field. What's left is pure shape. The shape is what travels.
The problem: entities multiplying by their own demand signal, placed without reference to what the substrate can sustain. The host pays a difference it was never asked about.
Strip "data center," "AI," "water," "power," "cooling," "community." What remains: appetite unbounded by location. Growth governed by internal signal, not host capacity. That is the shape that travels.
Somewhere — in a forest, a market, a molecule, a swarm — something already solved this exact shape and is alive because of it. Go find the field furthest from your own.
Sessile, continuous heat, fixed in place, cannot leave. Termite mound, desert succulent, coral head — organisms already solving this exact shape. Three mechanisms emerged: schedule by wet-bulb not electricity price; let temperature drift the way a camel does; couple to ground mass like a burrow.
A second candidate arrived mid-route: trees at night, offered as corroboration of the first.
The image is a souvenir. Take the working part: how the thing actually behaves to stay coherent. That behavior is the transferable answer.
The tree image matched. The mechanism did not — trees are C3, stomata open by day, closed after dark, the opposite schedule. Strip the picture. What remained: emission was constant. The mixing layer collapsed at sunset. The photochemical scrubber stopped. The medium is the actor. Absence is a mechanism.
What the mechanism named: dispersal capacity — real, local, time-varying, collapses nightly, currently unpriced. A third siting variable beside water and power.
The anima is inspiration; the mechanism is proof. Nothing crosses over on beauty alone.
Every transfer from Move 02 failed the same register check. Each organism works because it is small relative to its environment. A jackrabbit radiates into a desert; a 500 MW campus becomes the county's thermal problem. Beauty rejected. The conclusion moved: not a cooling problem — a siting problem. Organ or tumour, decided by whether growth is governed by the host's demand or by its own signalling.
The night-shift move failed the same test. Shifting heat rejection to cool hours dumps into the lidded room — the very thing Move 03 had just named. Beauty rejected again, on the same grounds.
Move 04 fired twice on the same underlying shape. That is what makes dispersal capacity a named variable rather than an observation: both reversals share it. A method that overturns its own operator twice, on the same problem, is not confirming — it is working.
Step zero · the seam
This one cannot be run from outside. You are standing in the layer. The reason dispersal capacity has no line on any siting model is that everyone models the plume and no one models the room they are breathing.
Analogic could have stopped at the smell. Animölogic had to get inside the air to find out the smell was never the story.
